Research, Knowledge-Sharing, and Learning

Lumajira is dedicated to generating robust evidence and fostering continuous learning to maximize our impact in Kenya's informal economy. We partner with universities, research institutions, and multi-disciplinary experts to conduct high-quality, applied research that addresses real-world challenges faced by informal workers. By grounding our programs in data and insights, we ensure interventions are effective, adaptable, and scalable.

We aim to contribute in diverse fields, including economics, sociology, engineering, public health, mathematics, environmental science, and urban planning. Examples include:

  • Partnering with engineering experts to develop safer, low-cost technologies for artisanal miners and quarry workers
  • Working with economists and sociologists to evaluate the income, employment, and well-being impacts of training and financial inclusion programs
  • Collaborating on environmental studies to assess sustainable practices in waste management and resource extraction in informal sectors
  • Conducting public health research on occupational safety, hygiene, and access to services for informal workers

We actively engage with Kenyan institutions, as well as international research networks and think tanks focused on development economics and informal livelihoods.

Lumajira also aims promote open knowledge-sharing by hosting forums, webinars, and conferences; publishing case studies, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed articles; and openly sharing anonymized data with stakeholders. This disseminates proven approaches and influences broader policy and practice.

Internally, we embed a strong Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) framework to systematically track outcomes, capture lessons, and integrate findings into program refinement—creating a feedback loop for adaptive management.

This objective positions Lumajira as a thought leader in informal sector development while contributing to Kenya’s Vision 2030  and SDG 17 ( 17.18).
